Educational Use

Content on this site is copyrighted. You may print materials from the American Academy of Family Physician's (AAFP's) website for nonprofit, educational purposes only, under the terms and conditions of the definition of "fair use." Proper attribution, including a notice of copyright, must be included on all copies.

Abiding by the principal factors of fair use, one can utilize a portion of a copyrighted work "as is" for purposes of nonprofit research and education. Appropriate credit of the source is required. The use of embedded third-party copyrighted works, or portions thereof, for any other purpose is not deemed fair use.

Please note that American Family Physician (AFP) and Family Practice Management (FPM) are registered with the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) for academic classroom use. Please submit your request to the Republication Department, CCC, by fax at (978) 646-8700 or online at www.copyright.com(www.copyright.com).

Other Uses

If you would like to reproduce, reprint, or adapt content from the AAFP website for any purposes other than those listed above, you must seek permission from the AAFP. You may complete the online permission request form or submit your request by U.S. mail, fax, or email to the Intellectual Property Department, AAFP, 11400 Tomahawk Creek Parkway, Leawood, KS 66211-2672; fax: (913) 906-6093; email: copyrights@aafp.org.

All requests should include the following information:

About the material you would like to use:

  • Title of page/section you want to use
  • URL of the page/section
  • Identify content; provide a sample if possible

About your proposed use:

  • Name of your website, publication, program, or product
  • URL of website
  • Name of publisher or sponsor
  • Type/format of publication in which the AAFP content will appear (e.g., website, newsletter, book, periodical, CD-ROM)
  • Estimated number of copies to be printed or produced
  • Whether the copies will be sold or free. If free, what funding, if any, is affiliated with the program/project?

Please note: Responses to permission requests usually take 14 to 21 business days from the time a request is received. Response times may be longer during periods of high volume. Incomplete requests will be returned and will not be processed. All rushed requests warrant a $50 rush fee to be submitted with the initial permission request. Responses to rush requests will be within seven business days from the day of receipt.

Fees and Payments

A permission fee is charged when material is to be used in another form of a publication (e.g., newsletter, textbook, manual, journal/magazine) or there are fees attached to content distribution. The fee depends on the amount of content being reprinted. Payment should be made in U.S. currency and must be received before permission is granted. (Credit cards currently are not accepted.)

Content Licensed to Databases

The AAFP has the authority to license content for which we are the copyright holder to database companies and/or document delivery services. Such database companies may distribute our content to third-party distributors with prior approval of the AAFP. The following are companies with which we have agreements for AFP and FPM:
