Awards & Scholarships

The AAFP's award system is designed to recognize individuals and/or groups whose initiatives or efforts benefit the family medicine specialty. The AAFP Office of Governance tracks all awards given by the organization and maintains records of previous recipients, award citations, and photographs of actual awards for reference.

The types of awards available through the academy are listed below:

Awards for Family Physicians

These awards recognize family physicians who are deemed to have made exceptional advances in furthering the strategic objectives of the Academy.

Awards for Medical Students & Residents

These awards recognize medical students and residents who are deemed to have made exceptional advances in furthering the strategic objectives of the AAFP.

Awards for Teachers of Family Medicine

These awards recognize medical education faculty who are deemed to have made exceptional advances in furthering the strategic objectives of the AAFP.

Chapter Awards

These awards recognize chapters that are deemed to have made exceptional advances in furthering the strategic objectives of the Academy and specialty of family medicine.

  • Outstanding Chapter Awards

    This award, which combines the Leadership in State Government Advocacy and Chapter Membership Awards into one award, recognizes a chapter's contribution toward exceptional advances in furthering the strategic objectives of the Academy and in the specialty of family medicine. Chapters can be recognized in various areas in addition to advocacy and membership.

  • Chapter Advocacy Day Assistance Grants

    This grant program assists small and medium chapters with planning and implementing a state-level lobby day for their members at their state capitol.

  • Leadership in State Government Advocacy

    This award is given for outstanding contributions in improving a constituent chapter's advocacy efforts.

General Awards

These awards recognize both physicians and other individuals that support family medicine, as well as organizations, who are deemed to have made exceptional advances in furthering the strategic objectives of the Academy.
