Robert A. Lee, MD, FAAFP, a family physician with The Iowa Clinic, P.C., in Johnston, Iowa, has been elected to the board of directors of the American Academy of Family Physicians. The AAFP represents 115,900 physicians and medical students nationwide. Lee was elected to a three-year term by the AAFP’s governing body, the Congress of Delegates.
As an AAFP board member, Lee advocates on behalf of family physicians and patients nationwide to inspire positive change in the U.S. health care system.
Lee, who was born and raised in the rural community of Harlan, Iowa, has been a practicing family physician in his home state for more than 20 years. He currently serves as the associate medical director for The Iowa Clinic, a multi-specialty clinic based in Des Moines, Iowa. He co-founded and practiced family medicine at Lee & Ruisch Family Medicine Physicians in Johnston from 2002 to 2012. Prior to that, he practiced for 11 years at Iowa Health Physicians in Des Moines. In addition, Lee has served as an adjunct clinical assistant professor of family medicine at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City.
A member of the AAFP since 1984, Lee has served on numerous commissions and committees, including the Commission on Quality and Practice, and the Commission on Practice Enhancement. Lee currently serves as Iowa’s delegate to the AAFP Congress of Delegates. He served as an alternate delegate from 2006 to 2009.
At the state level, Lee is an active member of the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians. He has held several key leadership positions on its board of directors, including president and board chair. In addition, he served as chairman of the New Physicians Committee and the Public Relations Committee. Lee is currently past president of the Iowa Medical Society where he has served on the board of directors since 2006.
An active member of his local community, Lee serves on the Urbandale Library Board and Science Center of Iowa Board. In addition, he is a physician for several local sports teams.
Lee earned his Bachelor of Arts in biology from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, and his medical degree from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. He completed his family medicine residency at the Grand Rapids Family Medicine Residency in Grand Rapids, Mich.
He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and has the AAFP Degree of Fellow, an earned degree awarded to family physicians for distinguished service and continuing medical education
