There are four progressive levels of ALSO status that can be achieved by maternity care providers. Each level maintains unique requirements and status duration.
Five-year status with option to renew
Earn ALSO Provider status by attending the ALSO Provider Course and passing the written exam and skills testing stations. Status renewal is available for Providers who attend another ALSO Provider Course or take an ALSO Refresher Course prior to the expiration of their five-year status. Providers with expired status must retake the ALSO Provider Course to regain status.

Evalutation required within one year of ALSO Instructor Course completion
An ALSO Provider who has completed the ALSO Instructor Course is considered an ALSO Instructor Candidate, pending evaluation of and approval for ALSO Approved Instructor status.
Five year status with option to maintain indefinitely
Awarded to instructor candidates who have been evaluated by ALSO Advisory Faculty and subsequently approved. ALSO Approved Instructor status is maintained by instructing at least three courses every five-year period.
Status is dependent on approved Instructor status
An ALSO Approved Instructor who has submitted an advisory faculty application with required documentation and has been recommended by a current advisory faculty will be considered. ALSO Advisory Faculty status remains valid in conjunction with current approved instructor status.
The role of Course Director may be fulfilled by an individual holding any of the four status levels.
All courses require one Advisory Faculty person. For all ALSO Courses, 50% of all course faculty must be either Approved Instructors or Instructor Candidates.
