Description of Program

There are two available options in our program:

  1. Global health electives are available to all residents. Elective opportunities vary and are tailored to resident interest. Requirements include presenting a case study from their trip and completing recommended reading.
  2. The global health track is limited to one resident per year to prepare residents to work part-time or full-time in medically underserved areas globally. The resident will use elective time to fulfill the requirements of the track. Residents receive enhanced training in infectious disease, surgical procedures, tropical medicine, travel medicine, public health and dental medicine.

Location(s) of program: Over the past few years we have had residents spend time in Central and South America, Asia, Europe and Africa. We are currently working to partner with a clinic in Central America as a site for several rotations per year.

Description of field experience: Trip duration ranges from one to eight weeks, with the majority of trips lasting two weeks. Residents may chose to spend time in a rural or urban clinic or hospital setting.

Description of didactics: Didactic is focused for individual electives and is longitudinal for the global health track resident over three years.

Cost to individual resident: AnMed Health Family Medicine residents are given up to $1,000 per year to help cover the expense of one trip. The global health track resident will have the cost of one trip covered entirely per year and $1,000 for each subsequent trip.

Number of residents who have participated in the last two years: 14

Description of faculty involvement: Faculty members are involved in leading trips as well as helping with formulation of the didactic material. Several faculty have been on more than 10 trips. The residency program director has been on 50 medical mission trips. Two faculty spent extended time in Kenya, Africa at Tenwek Hospital.
