Description of Program

The Area of Concentration in Travel/International Medicine is offered. It requires 10 hours didactic training, 10 supervised afternoons in the travel clinic, and attendance at a national travel medicine event, as well as a scholarly project. Individual non-AOC mission opportunities available.

Location(s) of program: Dominican Republic, Congo.

Description of field experience: We have been doing medical missions to San Juan de la Magauna, Dominican Republic for five years. One- to two-week trips in the March/April time frame, depending upon interest. This is a two-pronged mission with both surgical and primary care elements. We are also setting up a month-long opportunity in the fall for the Congo. Individual opportunities abound. In recent years residents have worked in Panama, Honduras, Guatemala, and Zambia, as well as provided disaster relief in the United States.

Description of didactics: Ten one-hour didactic sessions on core topics in travel medicine.

Cost to individual resident: Cost of mission trip depends on where you go. For AOC, one travel/international conference required, which is funded by residency CME funds. Cost for the trip to the Dominican Republic in 2007 was around $1,100.

Description of faculty involvement: We have multiple faculty members who do short-term overseas mission work on a regular basis. Plenty of opportunities in the local medical community as well. Area of Concentration directed by Charles W. Rhodes, MD, who has certification in travel medicine through the ISTM.
