Description of Program

This elective is available in April of each year. During the first two weeks, there is a didactic tropical medicine/underserved care course in Cincinnati, Ohio. This is followed by a two-week on-site clinical experience in rural areas of the Amazon State of Brazil.

Location(s) of program: Amazon State, Brazil

Description of field experience: After arriving in Manaus, there is a two-week tropical medicine/underserved medicine experience along tributaries of the Amazon River. The team travels by boat to distant communities and sets up primary care medical clinics. There are small teams that provide care in more remote small villages.

Description of didactics: Tropical medicine and concepts of underserved care.

Cost to individual resident: $2,800 plus expenses (medical preparation, vaccines, visa application, and tourism expenses).

Description of faculty involvement: This course is coordinated by Dr. Keith Holten, with assistance from Dr. Sandra Riegler. Several additional faculty members join them for the filed experience.
