Description of Program 

An established relationship with the town of Puerto Lempira, Honduras, in collaboration with Dr. Charles Pettit, a family physician affiliated with the Geriatrics Division at the USC School of Medicine and St. Martin's in the Field Episcopal Church. This is an ongoing project that will eventually establish a standing clinical operation in the town. It currently involves local public health measures (ex. parasite eradication, water supply).

Location(s) of program: Puerto Lempira, Honduras

Description of field experience: The international health elective rotation occurs three times a year in concert with the faculty trip to Honduras. It is a one-month rotation. Time in Honduras will generally be 10 days to two weeks. Residents will accompany faculty for the duration of the field experience. Prior to leaving, resident(s) will help prepare all medical and other items for the trip, research and obtain appropriate travel immunizations and prophylaxis, and visit the travel medicine clinic. During the trip, resident(s) will assist in all matters related to the experience. Upon returning they will research and present to the residency on an international health topic.

Description of didactics: Reading materials prior to the trip. Faculty small group sessions while in Honduras. Resident(s) must present on experience and an international health topic upon returning.

Cost to individual resident: Some portion or all of travel costs will be paid by the residency. Educational funds may also be used for the experience.
