Self Regional Healthcare Family Medicine Residency
Description of Program
The Self Regional Healthcare Family Medicine Residency Program in Greenwood, SC, is a community-based program focusing on developing quality family physicians while providing outstanding patient care. All of the faculty are board certified in their specialty and hold faculty appointments at the Medical University of South Carolina. This allows utilization of university resources while still maintaining a small hospital feel.
Location(s) of program: Central and South America, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Asia.
Description of field experience: Most teams provide primary health care to include minor surgery and joint injections. Some teams conduct medical conferences or construct new clinics. Length of program is one week in Central and South America; two weeks in all other locations (Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia).
Description of didactics: No formal lectures, but residents work closely with board-certified family physicians and other specialists.
Cost to individual resident: $1,500 to $3,500 depending on location (includes airfare, travel insurance, hotel accommodations, in-country meals, departure tax, and other in-country expenses except souvenirs purchased).

Description of faculty involvement: Faculty serve as team leaders -- organize team, order medicines and supplies, and coordinate daily clinics.

Does the program accept residents from outside the program for trips? Yes
Approximate time of year/duration of trips: Volunteers in Medical Missions (VIMM) sponsors 15-20 trips per year, with 1 to 2 trips each month, except in December. Trips last 1 to 2 weeks each, but we have some arrangements that allow longer experiences (1 to 2 months).
