Description of Program

Our residency program, located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, combines the best of community and academic training to provide our residents a comprehensive and innovative training experience. International elective opportunities abound with previously established and resident-arranged international sites.

Location(s) of program: In recent years, residents have traveled to Uganda, Kenya, Ecuador, Bangladesh, Japan, and Jamaica for their medical experiences.

Description of field experience: Residents have the opportunity to schedule a one-month international elective during their second or third year of residency. Field, clinic and hospital experience varies widely based on the needs of the communities served and resident interest.

Description of didactics: There are regular travel medicine lectures throughout the residency curriculum with regional lectures provided by residents and faculty upon their return from international experiences. Local resident electives have also been developed to meet the needs

Cost to individual resident: Internal endowment funding is available to all residents through an application process. All resident travel and lodging expenses have been funded through this endowment over the last several years.

Description of faculty involvement: Family medicine faculty participate in the Uganda, Ecuador and Jamaica experiences, and faculty from other departments at the University participate in many other experiences.

Approximate time of year/duration of trips: Resident electives are one month and can occur at any time of year.
