Description of Program 

International opportunities available to family medicine residents at the University of Virginia are offered in collaboration with UVA's Center for Global Health. The department also cares for a large number of refugees and immigrants in the International Family Medicine Clinic.

Location(s) of program: Saipan, South Africa, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Colombia.

Description of field experience: Field experiences vary based on the location, and include a mix of inpatient and outpatient clinical experiences provided in collaboration with existing health facilities. Residents in the International Family Medicine Clinic provide continuity care to patients from Somalia, Liberia, Burma, Iraq, Central Asia, and Central and South America.

Description of didactics: The department holds a monthly international rounds.

Cost to individual resident: Each UVA Family Medicine resident can take one away elective during PGY-1 and PGY-2. The hospital pays salary and malpractice. Housing is provided at some sites. Residents are responsible for travel costs, food and, in some instances, lodging.

Description of faculty involvement: Faculty supervise residents in the International Family Medicine Clinic. We have established relationships with faculty at international sites.

Approximate time of year/duration of trips: Resident overseas electives are typically one month in duration, and are scheduled to best meet the educational needs of the resident.
