Description of Program
One-month optional rotation can be taken in place of a rural rotation. Residents may travel anywhere deemed safe by the U.S. Department of State and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Locations need to have an approved on-site supervisor for rotation.
Location(s) of program: Varied -- typically in Central or South America, but has also included Pakistan.
Description of field experience: Typically 2 to 4 weeks of clinical medicine, usually in a rural area of the selected country.
Description of didactics: Depends on the rotation. If the rotation includes less than three weeks of clinical time, the resident is asked to do some independent study on tropical diseases or other topic pertinent to the location.
Cost to individual resident: About $2,000.

Description of faculty involvement: Supervision of resident preparing for trip. Faculty have accompanied residents on trips in the past.

Approximate time of year/duration of trips: Time of year varies depending on location. Duration is typically 2 to 4 weeks.
