Responsibilities:

  • Bring the resident perspective to all AAFP Board deliberations
  • Help orient other resident officers to the AAFP governance and policy
  • Communicate issues of importance to the appropriate AAFP commissions
  • Coordinate the discussions of the resident delegation at the AAFP Congress of Delegates
  • Attend all AAFP Board of Directors meetings (voting member)
  • Attend all Commission on Education (COE) Subcommittee on Resident and Student Issues (SRSI) (voting member)
  • Attend all another Commission according to AAFP Board policy
  • Attend National Conference the year following election, including facilitating the candidates’ forum
  • Attend two Congress of Delegates and AAFP Scientific Assemblies
  • Attend the Annual Leadership Forum (ALF)
  • Attend other meetings as directed by the Board Chair

Criteria:

  • At least one year of national level experience in AAFP leadership (National Conference Chair, National Delegate, National FMIG Coordinator, AAFP commission member, or representative to Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) or Association of Family Medicine Program Directors (AFMRD) or AAFP Foundation Board of Trustees)
  • Must have residency director’s endorsement that time away from residency will be granted to attend meetings

Term: Elected at National Conference and confirmed by AAFP Executive Board for one year term (September 1, 2014 – August 31, 2015)

Time commitment away from residency: Approximately 45 days (includes weekends) for travel and attendance at meetings.

Time commitment for communication and meeting preparation: Substantial

Funding: Provided for meeting attendance according to AAFP Board of Director guidelines

Note: The resident member of the Board can only serve on the Board once. He/she is not eligible for re-election. In the future, he/she will not be eligible to serve on the AAFP Board as new physician representative.

Resident Chair of the National Conference

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates and makes decisions regarding resident activities throughout the year
  • Provides input into planning the theme, programming, and special activities for the upcoming National Conference
  • Functions as a member of the AAFP Commission on Education (COE)
  • Presides at the business sessions of the National Congress of Family Medicine Residents the year following election

Benefits:

  • Involved with planning the National Conference
  • Hold a highly visible resident leadership position for the AAFP
  • May involve attendance at other meetings, as directed by the AAFP Board Chair or Medical Education Staff

Criteria:

  • At least one year of national level experience in AAFP leadership (National Conference Chair, National Delegate, National FMIG Coordinator, AAFP commission member, or representative to Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) or Association of Family Medicine Program Directors (AFMRD) or AAFP Foundation Board of Trustees)
  • Must have residency director’s endorsement that time away from residency will be granted to attend meetings

Time commitment away from residency: Approximately 15-20 days (includes weekends) for travel and attendance at meetings

Time commitment for communication and meeting preparation: Substantial. Conference calls may be used in lieu of in person meetings, if necessary.

Funding: Travel covered according to AAFP Travel Policy. A per diem for travel to and attendance at the required days of the meetings covers expenses (lodging and food).

Responsibilities:

  • Represents resident member interests, as voted on by the National Congress of Family Medicine Residents, at the AAFP Congress of Delegates by following resolutions and issues pertinent to family medicine residents
  • Functions as a member of the AAFP Commission on Education (COE)
  • Keeps lines of communication open with resident members to facilitate dialogue on issues important to residents
  • Provides assistance to Resident Chair in coordination of resident activities.

Benefits:

  • Experiences Congress of Delegates and learns the governance process of the AAFP
  • Holds a national resident leadership position for the AAFP
  • May function as a representative to other national resident organizations, as assigned

Criteria:

  • Demonstrated interest and involvement in family medicine interest groups or state organizations as a student or resident.
  • Does not need previous experience in a national AAFP leadership position.
  • Must have residency director’s endorsement that time away from residency will be granted to attend meetings

Term: Elected at National Conference and confirmed by AAFP Executive Board for one 14-month term that begins with serving as alternate delegate immediately after election, and ends with serving as delegate to the 2015 Congress of Delegates (August 2014-September 2015).

Time commitment away from residency: Approximately 10-15 days (includes weekends) for travel and attendance at meetings

Resident Representative to the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Board of Directors

The Society of Teachers of Family Medicine was founded to:

  • Support and promote family medicine as an academic discipline
  • Maintain and continually improve the quality of family medicine and general medicine education
  • Encourage research and teaching in family medicine
  • Facilitate the professional growth and development of family medicine educators
  • Encourage a multidisciplinary and international approach to family medicine education
  • Provide a forum for the interchange of experience and ideas among its members and other interested persons.

Responsibilities:

  • Represents the resident perspective to the STFM Board of Directors (does not represent the AAFP)
  • Is a functioning, but non-voting, member of the STFM Board of Directors
  • Is a functioning, but non-voting member of the STFM Education Committee

Benefits:

  • Helps define the role of STFM in resident education
  • Offers mentoring opportunities by leaders in family medicine education
  • May help organize sessions on academic family medicine to be presented at National Conference

Criteria:

  • Demonstrated interest and involvement in family medicine interest groups, medical school, or state organizations as a student or resident
  • Must have residency director’s endorsement that time away from residency will be granted to attend meetings

Term:

  • Elected at National Conference and confirmed by the AAFP Executive Board.
  • Final approval granted by STFM Board of Directors for one year term (September 1, 2014 – August 31, 2015)
  • The STFM Board may consider offering the resident the option to serve a second term, based on his/her performance.

Resident Member of the AAFP Foundation Board of Trustees (No election in 2014)

NOTE: This position is currently filled. The resident member of the AAFP Foundation will open in summer 2015.

The AAFP Foundation’s mission is to advance the values of family medicine by promoting humanitarian, educational, and scientific initiatives that improve the health of all people.

Responsibilities:

  • Is a full voting member of the AAFP Foundation Board of Trustees
  • Attends two Foundation Board meetings following election and confirmation by the AAFP Foundation Board.
  • Attends the National Conference
  • Serves as the Foundation liaison to the Commission on Education and the Subcommittee on Resident and Student Issues
  • Provides input into potential Foundation programming directed towards residents
  • Serves as the Foundation’s advocate with the resident membership
  • Serves on at least three Foundation committees as assigned by the Foundation President.

  • Affords opportunities for mentoring from established leaders of the AAFP Foundation

Criteria:

  • May be in any year of residency
  • Does not need previous experience in a national AAFP leadership position

Term:

  • The term is renewable for an additional year at the discretion of the AAFP Foundation Board.

  • Attend required AFMRD Board Meetings
  • Participate in monthly conference calls of the AFMRD Board of Directors

  • Attend National Conference to gather information on resident issues
