Increase networking opportunities for members who have a passion to improve health through the focus on healthy lifestyle and foster communication and dialogue on debates in nutrition, fitness and other self-care areas. Discuss evidence-based lifestyle approaches to common conditions (e.g. obesity, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, etc.) seen in family medicine.

Objectives

  • Increase networking opportunities to members who have a passion to improve health through the focus on healthy lifestyle.
  • Foster communication and healthy dialogue on debates in nutrition, fitness and other self-care areas.
  • Discuss evidence-based lifestyle approaches to common conditions (e.g. obesity, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, etc.) seen in family medicine.
  • Increase the awareness of the Lifestyle Medicine MIG to medical students and residents who have a keen interest in healthy lifestyles to improve the recruitment and retention of family physicians.
  • Assist the AAFP in membership recruitment and retention of family physicians who have a passion to improve health through focus on a healthy lifestyle.

Long-term Goals

  • Educate and empower Physicians, Residents and Students about healthy lifestyles, in particular, evidence based approaches to nutrition, physical activity, sleep, mindfulness, and stress management.
  • Improve the health and wellness of AAFP members by education, active engagement and member challenges to reduce burnout and restore the joy in practicing medicine.
  • Advocate for the health of the public by advocating for an increase focus on lifestyle interventions in AAFP policy.
  • Help empower our patients to take charge of their health by activating their own self-healing mechanisms using motivational interviewing and health coaching techniques.
