Provide a collective voice for family physicians to advocate for fair policies and access to education relating to point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in family medicine. Work to improve access to education and resources to help incorporate POCUS into family physicians' practices and advocate for related education in medical school and family medicine graduate medical education.

Objectives

  • Communicate between AAFP members and leadership to ensure input and feedback on issues and activities related to Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS).
  • Establish communication and develop opportunities for collaboration with other national medical organizations whose members support and promote POCUS.
  • Plan meetings to facilitate education and networking for AAFP clinicians and educations with an interest in POCUS.
  • Contribute to planning content for AAFP CME activities relevant to POCUS as requested by AAFP leadership.
  • Develop resources for medical student and resident education relating to POCUS.
  • Develop resources to support AAFP members interested in understanding the administrative aspects of what is needed to successfully incorporate POCUS into their practice.
  • Assist the AAFP in membership recruitment and retention of family physicians who are interested in point-of-care ultrasound.

Long-term Goals

  • Provide support and education for family practitioners who wish to incorporate POCUS in procedural guidance; as well as emergency, obstetrical, musculoskeletal, and other general medical diagnostic applications.
  • Serve as a voice for family physicians relating to all aspects of POCUS use in family medicine.
  • Facilitate professional development and continuing medical education in areas relating to POCUS.
  • Promote policies, educational goals, and credentialing standards for POCUS that are consistent with the AAFP's strategic objectives.

  • Advocate for collaboration and networking in POCUS education, training and research.
  • Develop leadership of the POCUS Medical Interest Group participants by creating opportunities for leadership experience through advocacy, collaboration and education on a national level.
