Tell legislators that cigars should not be exempt from FDA regulation
Smoking directly contributes to the deaths of more than 440,000 Americans each year, according to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It represents the single leading cause of preventable death in the United States.
In economic terms, each pack of cigarettes sold produces approximately $7 in combined medical costs and lost productivity, according to the CDC. That’s about $157 billion annually.
Family physicians play a critical role in advocating for effective policies to prevent and treat tobacco and nicotine addiction. They also provide policymakers with vital expertise and input regarding policies designed to prevent young people from picking up the habit and help others beat this deadly and pervasive addiction.

07/07/2015 — This letter objects to a provision in the House's FY 2016 appropriations for the Department of Agriculture, the Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies that would delay the requirement that the FDA review new tobacco products before they can be sold. The tobacco industry is seeking to have this requirement delayed until after the FDA deems it has authority to regulate nicotine delivery devices like e-cigarettes. If the legislation was successful, tobacco products (including e-cigarettes) introduced since 2009 when the law gave FDA authority to regulate tobacco products would not be subject to FDA's review.
