1013 Sickle Cell Disease in Childhood: Part I. Laboratory Diagnosis, Pathophysiology and Health Maintenance
DORIS L. WETHERS, M.D.
Newborns at risk for sickle cell disease should be screened before two months of age to ensure the early institution of lifesaving preventive measures. Prophylactic penicillin initiated soon after birth, as well as the timely administration of Haemophilus influenzae type b and pneumococcal vaccines, reduces the incidence of H. influenzae and pneumococcal sepsis.

Alternative Therapies: Part I. Depression, Diabetes, Obesity

VINCENT MORELLI, M.D., and ROGER J. ZOOROB, M.D., M.P.H.
Certain natural supplements may be helpful in the management of common medical conditions, but careful selection of patients and knowledge of side effects are critical components in effective use. In the first part of this two-part article, the role of natural supplements in the management of depression, diabetes and obesity is discussed.
1064 Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy: A Common Cause of Spinal Cord Dysfunction in Older Persons

Problem-Oriented Diagnosis
Diagnosis of Vaginitis
MARI E. EGAN, M.D., and MARTIN S. LIPSKY, M.D.
The most common causes of vaginitis are bacterial vaginosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis and trichomoniasis. A saline wet-mount preparation, a potassium hydroxide preparation, a litmus test for vaginal pH and a whiff test can help distinguish these infections.
1109 A Practical Approach to Uncomplicated Seizures in Children
GARY N. MCABEE, D.O., J.D. and JAMES E. WARK, M.D.
Febrile seizures, rolandic seizures and video gamerelated seizures are typically not associated with lesions on brain scans and may not require medication. Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy does not require neuroimaging but requires medication; complex partial epilepsy often requires neuroimaging and medical treatment.
1119 Cushing's Disease: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Evaluation
LAWRENCE F. KIRK, JR., M.D., ROBERT B. HASH, M.D., HAROLD P. KATNER, M.D., and TOM JONES, M.D.
A 24-hour urine collection with analysis for urinary free cortisol excretion is the best screening test, but dexamethasone suppression tests and other methods may be required for a definitive diagnosis.
