Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors have been shown to improve or stabilize several chronic conditions. Physicians should be comfortable using these agents as primary, secondary, or tertiary prevention in the majority of patients with refractory hypertension, congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction, diabetes mellitus, chronic renal insufficiency, and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
