Cytomegalovirus

Immunosuppressed patients can experience severe illness caused by reactivation of latent cytomegalovirus. Highly active antiretroviral therapy has decreased the incidence of cytomegalovirus retinitis but has resulted in a new set of ophthalmologic complications induced by restoration of immune competency and the pro-inflammatory response of the host to cytomegalovirus.

Early recognition and treatment of hip fracture are important in reducing morbidity and mortality and preserving quality of life. When initial radiographic findings are indeterminate, other imaging modalities, such as magnetic resonance imaging or bone scanning, can be useful in confirming the presence of hip fracture.

Thyroid Nodules

The main objective of evaluating thyroid nodules is to exclude malignancy. Laboratory evaluation may include thyroid-stimulating hormone testing and fine-needle aspiration. Surgery remains the primary treatment for malignant lesions, and ablation by postoperative radioactive iodine is often used in high-risk patients.
