Update on the Prevention and Treatment of Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Preventive strategies recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) include individualized education based on the patient's developmental stage and understanding of sexual issues, a hepatitis B vaccine series in unimmunized patients who are being evaluated for a sexually transmitted disease, and hepatitis A vaccine in some men. The CDC guidelines also contain updated recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of gonorrhea, chlamydial infection, genital herpes, and diseases characterized by vaginal discharge.
