Inside AFP
Recognizing the “Behind the Scenes” Specialists of AFP
Am Fam Physician. 2008 Feb 15;77(4):408.
Publishing a clinical review journal 24 times a year requires significant contributions from a variety of people, many of whom get very little, if any, public recognition for their efforts. Yet, it is because of their suggestions and contributions that AFP remains the best read clinical journal in primary care.
One such group is the AFP Editorial Advisory Board. The members of the Board are invited by Jay Siwek, MD, editor, and serve as liaisons between AFP and the organizations they represent. In some cases, they are subspecialists (a nephrologist representing the American Society of Nephrology, for example), while about a third of them are family physicians representing a diverse group of disciplines, such as adolescent medicine, alcohol and drug abuse, clinical pharmacology, community medicine, and so forth. These representatives inform Dr. Siwek or other AFP medical editors when new guidelines, recommendations, or other important information becomes available in their specialty area. And in addition to writing or soliciting at least one manuscript a year, many serve as peer reviewers of manuscripts that focus on subspecialty topics. We thank the physicians listed below for their ongoing support and contributions to AFP by their service on the Editorial Advisory Board.
These Board members serve at the invitation of Dr. Siwek, but several hundred others serve AFP by reviewing manuscripts. If you would like to serve as a peer reviewer for AFP manuscripts, please e-mail a note of interest to afpjournal@georgetown.edu. We will send you a reviewer profile to fill out, and, in due time, a manuscript to review.
