Kurt C. Stange, M.D., Ph.D.
Editor

Dr. Stange is a family physician and epidemiologist with an active clinical practice.  He is Professor of Family Medicine, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Oncology, and Sociology, and the Gertrude Donnelly Hess, M.D., Professor of Oncology Research at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.  Stange also serves as Associate Director for Prevention, Control and Population Research at the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals of Cleveland, Ohio.  He directs the Center for Research in Family Medicine and Primary Care, one of three research centers funded by the American Academy of Family Physicians. Stange is actively engaged in ongoing basic and applied research that aims to understand the core structures and processes of primary care practice and their effect on preventive service delivery and patient outcomes.  His work also focuses on discovering new methods of enhancing the comprehensive and integrative generalist approach to patient care.  He is a diplomate of the American Academy of Family Physicians, member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and served as President of the North American Primary Care Research Group.

Claire Zimmerman
Managing Editor

Zimmerman brings more than 20 years of editorial experience in the medical publishing field to her position as Managing Editor of the Annals.  Most recently, she was Assistant Editor of the Journal of the American Board of Family Practice, a national medical journal dedicated to the specialty of family practice.  Zimmerman also served as Assistant Editor of the Journal of Family Practice and Alabama Journal of the Medical Sciences.  She is a member of the American Medical Writers Association and the Council of Science Editors.  Zimmerman received a bachelor's degree in English from Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio.

William R. Phillips, M.D., MPH
Senior Associate Editor

Dr. Phillips brings 20 years of private practice experience to teaching, research and professional leadership in primary care.  He is Clinical Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Washington and a Senior Research Scientist at the Centers for Public Health Evaluation and Research of Battelle Memorial Institute. He has served as President of the North American Primary Care Research Group, Chair of the AAFP Commission on Science (formerly the Commission on Clinical Policies and Research), and member of the AAFP Task Force on Enhancing Family Medicine Research. Phillips is a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine and a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians as well as a Diplomate of the American Board of Preventive Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine. In 1999 he was honored as Family Doctor of the Year for Washington State. 

Louise S. Acheson, M.D., M.S.

Dr. Acheson is Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Oncology, and Assistant Professor of Reproductive Biology at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Acheson was in active family practice in Seattle, Wash., prior to joining University Hospitals of Cleveland in 1984, where she directed the curriculum in family practice maternity care and women's health. She was Associate Editor of The Archives of Family Medicine for eight years and co-edited the 1997 textbook, Women's Health in Primary Care.  Acheson's recent work has focused on applications of new genetic knowledge in primary care. A career development award from the National Cancer Institute supports her research on the use of family history to target cancer prevention. She is a member of the steering committee of the American College of Medical Genetics Special Interest Group on Adult Genetic Diseases.

Benjamin F. Crabtree, Ph.D.

Dr. Crabtree, a medical anthropologist and qualitative researcher, is Professor and Research Director in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and Director of the Qualitative Core of the Center for Research in Family Practice and Primary Care.  He is Principal Investigator of a major five-year study, funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, testing a tailored practice-level intervention strategy to simultaneously improve the delivery of care for diabetes, hypertension and asthma, and for tobacco and cholesterol screening.  Crabtree and Consulting Editor, William L. Miller, co-edited the widely-used book, Doing Qualitative Research, now in its second edition, published by Sage Publications.  Crabtree's research interests include organizational design and change, primary care practice improvement, complexity science, and transdisciplinary research team building.

Paul A. Nutting, M.D., M.S.P.H.

Dr. Nutting has an extensive background in research, development, and evaluation of the quality of primary health care programs. His research focuses on chronic care, with emphases on improving primary care for depression and diabetes.  Nutting is Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and Director of Research for the Center for Research Strategies in Denver, Colorado.  He has served as Editor of The Journal of Family Practice, Executive Director of the Ambulatory Sentinel Practice Network, Deputy Director of the Center for General Health Services Research of the U.S. Public Health Service, and Director of the Division of Primary Care for the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research. He was elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 1994.

Robin S. Gotler, M.A.
Essays Editor

Ms. Gotler has been a regular contributor to the family practice literature.  She received her Master's Degree in Bioethics from Case Western Reserve University and is a Ph.D. student in the History of Medicine. Gotler has extensive experience in family practice research administration and the development of practice-based research networks.  Her research interests include the social history of family practice, the history of medical specialization, end-of-life issues, and patient decision-making.

William L. Miller, M.D., M.A.

Dr. Miller, Professor and Chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, Pa., is a family physician and medical anthropologist.  He helped establish the Lehigh Valley Family Practice Residency Program in 1994, building upon a career as a family practice educator and practicing family physician.  His research interests are in hypertension, pain, family systems and the clinical encounter.  Miller is a member of the Board of Directors of the North American Primary Care Research Group, and was Co-chair of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine 2001 conference, "Earth Jazz: Finding Healing Rhythms in Families, Health and Ecology."  He is one of the pioneers of qualitative research methods in primary care and has collaborated extensively with Annals Associate Editor Benjamin Crabtree, Ph.D. 

Stephen J. Zyzanski, Ph.D.
Statistical Editor

Dr. Zyzanski is Professor of Family Medicine, Biostatistics and Epidemiology and Oncology at Case Western Reserve University.  He has formal training in psychometrics, biostatistics and epidemiology, and has extensive experience with measurement, data analysis, evaluation and research methods.  He has directed the Division of Research in the Department of Family Medicine at Case Western Reserve University since 1979, serving as the department's methodological and statistical consultant.  He has also developed and published numerous behavioral instruments used in health research and is the Founding Director of the Behavior Measurement Core Facility of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals of Cleveland, Ohio. His recent research interests include chronic disease epidemiology, primary care and health services research, delivery of preventive services in primary care, translational genetics, and behavioral measurement in primary care and cancer research.
