Comments:
Students will participate in the Family Medicine Teaching Service at Shadyside, at the 1st year resident level under direct supervision of senior residents, attendings and faculty. Student will be responsible for initial patient evaluation, care delivery goals, order writing, and follow up on lab/x-ray evaluations. Students will cover some night calls and weekend coverage, and attend conferences such as Behavioral Science, Pediatrics and OB/GYN, Surgery and Adult Medicine.

Students participate on the Mckeesport Hospital Family Practice Inpatient Serivce at the intern or 1st year resident level, closely supervised by senior residents and attendings. They will participate in all conferences, weekly lectures, morning report, both teaching and work rounds, and some night and weekend calls. Students will perform admitting evaluation, H & P, implement care plans, and write orders and progress notes.

The AI student will be an integral part of a medical floor teaching team at St. Margaret. The student will perform inital patient evaluations and institute diagnostic/therapeutic measures under the guidance of an attending and senior resident. Duties will include morning report and teaching rounds, general work rounds, and work-ups. Attendance at all medical education conferences and seminars is required, as well as some on-call time.

Student will be given opportunities to develop a view of Family Centered Maternity Care on a Community Basis through outpatient clinics in the greater Pittsburgh area, readings, experience, and a Mini-project. They will experience integrated, interdisciplinary maternity care; prenatal care barries; programs for reducing low birth weight; the use of Doulas, midwives, etc. In prenatal/intrapartum care; the role of health insures; and drug abuse in pregnancy.
