ICD-9 Coding Tools From FPM

Family Practice Management offers four tools to help with your ICD-9 coding. Three are updated versions of tools we've offered for years: a list of all this year's changes, the FPM Short List and the FPM Long List. The fourth tool, which we introduced last year, is an easily searchable database of ICD-9 codes for your PDA.

ICD-9 Changes for 2007-2008

Here’s a list of all the new, revised and deleted ICD-9 codes (about 200 total) for 2007-2008. The list is available in three formats:

FPM Short List

This list of about 600 codes is a popular FPM resource. At two pages in print, it's hard to beat for convenience. It replaces ICD-9 descriptors with problem-oriented descriptors of conditions common in family practice. The 100 codes that are preceded by a red arrow have been identified by the list authors as especially common in family practice. The FPM Short List is available in three formats to better suit your specific needs:

FPM Long List

This list of about 1,500 codes common in family practice expands on the FPM Short List to include a wider range of four-digit and five-digit codes. It also includes more codes useful for hospital care. The FPM Long List is also available in three formats:

FPM ICD-9 Reference for PDA

This resource is an easy-to-search database of ICD-9 codes for use with your personal digital assistant (PDA). There are two versions -- one for Palm users and one for Pocket PC users. The zip file contains two files: the ICD-9 database and a help file. You will also need to load a program called HandyShopper onto your PDA. Instructions for that step are included in the help file.

Download: Palm zip file | Pocket PC zip file

(Please note: Older PDAs' processing speeds might be too slow to make the ICD-9 file functional. For Palm system requirements, click here. For Pocket PC/Windows Mobile system requirements, click here.)
