Chapters lobby for change
New Jersey chapter offers tips
- Start slow. Form a governmental affairs committee and hire a
part-time lobbyist, as the New Jersey AFP has. "We don't get everything we
want, but things would be a heck of a lot worse if we weren't this involved,"
said Jeffrey Zlotnick, M.D., of Phillipsburg, N.J.
- Take advantage of faxes, e-mail and online discussion groups to
ease the flow of information.
- Dedicate time in your schedule to stay up-to-date on pending
legislation.
- Develop relationships with state legislators, their staffs,
lobbyists and other medical professional groups.
- Focus your efforts on a few key issues.
