Academy bestows honors, awards
Every year, the Academy bestows
honors and awards on its members and others during the Annual Assembly. This
year, the following awards were presented:
- Honorary Membership -- the AAFP's highest honor -- Professor Julio Ceitlin
of Buenos Aires, Argentina (this 2001 award was received at this Assembly),
and Marian Stuart, Ph.D., of New Brunswick, N.J.
- Family Physician of the Year -- Darrell Carter, M.D., of Granite Falls,
Minn.
- Exemplary Teaching Awards -- Janice Daugherty, M.D., of Greenville, N.C.
(full time); Pepi Granat, M.D., of South Miami, Fla. (part time); and Dennis
Peterson, M.D., of Willmar, Minn. (volunteer)
- John G. Walsh Award -- F. Marian Bishop, Ph.D., M.S.P.H., of Salt Lake
City
- Outstanding Service Award -- Carla Duryee of Overland Park, Kan.
- President's Awards -- Robert Higgins, M.D., and Barbara Higgins (posthumously)
of Anacortes, Wash.; Rear Adm. Joan Engel of Pensacola, Fla.; and William
Sutton, Ph.D., of New Orleans
- Public Health Award -- Richard Feldman, M.D., of Beech Grove, Ind.
- Robert Graham Family Physician Executive Award -- Marc Rivo, M.D., M.P.H.,
of Miami Beach, Fla.
- Thomas W. Johnson Award -- Robert Avant, M.D., of Lexington, Ky.
- Walter H. Kemp Award -- Thomas Gates, M.D., of Lancaster, Pa.
