Research papers, posters garner awards
Members of the AAFP Committee on Scientific
Program bestowed awards during the Scientific Assembly for family practice
research presentations and for poster presentations by medical students and
family practice residents.
Awards of $1,000 apiece went to the following researchers for their
family practice research presentations:
- Ariel Smits, M.D., M.P.H., of Portland, Ore., for "Maternity Care
in Oregon: Trends and Factors Affecting Participation"
- Angela Watkins and Sam Wasmann of Portland, Ore., for "An
Evaluation of the Care Provided to Patients Prescribed Controlled Substances at
an Academic Family Practice Center"
- David Rabago, M.D., of Madison, Wis., for "The Efficacy of
Hypertonic Saline Nasal Irrigation Among Patients With Sinusitis: A 12-Month
Follow-up"
- Mahboob Rahman, M.D., of Cleveland for "Cardiovascular Disease and
Renal Disease Outcomes in Hypertensive Patients With Various Levels of Baseline
Renal Function"
- Mark Stephens, M.D., M.S., of the Uniformed Services AFP for
"Smallpox Myocarditis"
Awards of $250 apiece went to these researchers for their
presentations:
- Eric Schackow, M.D., Ph.D., of Chicago for "Audience Response

- Jeffrey Alpert, M.D., of Salt Lake City for "Health Fair

- Charles Blackadar, M.D., of Silverdale, Wash., for "A
Retrospective Review of Performance and Utility of Routine Clinical Pelvimetry"
- Amar Duggirala, D.O., of Washington, D.C., for "Do Teaching
Hospitals Deliver Higher Quality of Care? Post-operative Adverse Events in
Teaching and Non-teaching Hospitals"
- Nidhi Jain, M.D., M.P.H., of Atlanta for "Factors Associated With
Receiving Hepatitis B Vaccines Among High-Risk Adults in the United States: An
Analysis of the National Health Interview Survey, 2000"
- Maj. Michael Cohen, D.O., of Spring Lake, N.C., for "Acute
Eosinophilic Pneumonia: A Case Report"
The first-place award of $700 for a resident poster went to Jonathan
Shraga, D.O., of the Cabarrus Family Medicine Residency Program in Charlotte,
N.C., for "Bladder Scanning in Family Medicine."
The second-place award of $300 for a resident poster went to Jun Mao,
M.D., of the Somerset Family Practice Residency Program in Piscataway, N.J.,
for "Adolescent Male Testicular Health Study."
The first-place award of $700 for a medical student poster went to
Matthew Thompson of the University of Minnesota -- Duluth School of
Medicine for "Ranking Applicants to FP Residencies."
The second-place award of $300 for a medical student poster went to
Patricia Myung, B.A., of Brown Medical School, Providence, R.I., for "Sexual
Transmission of Hepatitis C."
