The latest Physicians With Heart airlift recently returned from its destination -- Kyrgyzstan. The Oct. 8 - 19 journey delivered more than $8 million (U.S. wholesale value) in pharmaceuticals and other medical supplies to the former Soviet republic.
A delegation of more than 50 medical professionals, including many AAFP members; AAFP and AAFP Foundation staff; and other volunteers, traveled with the donated supplies, ensuring their safe arrival at hospitals and clinics across the country.
In addition to delivering needed medical supplies, delegation members presented Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics courses and provided education about family medicine to Kyrgyz physicians. They also participated in a children's project to benefit orphanages in Tokmok and Jalal-Abad and a school in Kara Balta.
PWH is jointly sponsored by the AAFP; AAFP Foundation; and Olathe, Kan.-based humanitarian aid organization Heart to Heart International. This is the 12th time the project has traveled to bring medical supplies and training to health care professionals in former Soviet republics and other selected areas of the globe.
