Family physicians are all about helping people -- all people -- live healthier lives. For more than a decade, the AAFP and AAFP Foundation have teamed up with the Olathe, Kan.-based humanitarian group Heart to Heart International and, with the aid of the U.S. State Department, have taken that philosophy overseas. This year, the Physicians With Heart airlift traveled to the former Soviet republic of Georgia Oct. 28 Nov. 6.
Each year, FPs join the airlift's volunteer delegation, ensuring delivery of tons of donated pharmaceuticals and other supplies, educating the country's physicians about family medicine, and participating in children's projects.
The 2004 delegation led educational symposia in Tbilisi, the republic's capital, and Kutaisi, its second-largest city. Trip organizers will offer Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics courses -- two provider courses and one instructor course -- as part of the educational fare. Children's projects for this year's trip will benefit the Tbilisi Boarding School for Deaf Children and the Akhalgori Orphanage.
For information about future delegations, contact Priscilla Wood at Heart to Heart International by e-mail at pwood@hearttoheart.org or by phone at (405) 787-5200, Ext. 100.
Donations from the companies listed at right helped make the 2004 trip possible.
