Initiative creates two brochures to boost seniors' nutritional health

The Nutrition Screening Initiative has published two new brochures to help older persons and their family physicians evaluate seniors' nutritional health. Both brochures can be used with DETERMINE, NSI's nutritional health checklist.

DETERMINE is a mnemonic de-vice in which each letter of the word stands for a nutritional question. Older patients' answers to the questions can help a family physician judge their nutritional status.

The brochures are:

• "Strong & Healthy: Your Guide for Better Nutritional Health," which addresses risk factors for poor nutritional status identified by the DETERMINE checklist and provides simple steps to improve nutritional health.
• "Nutrition Matters: A Member Handbook to Nutrition Care," designed for use in managed care. This brochure helps introduce new Medicare members to a plan's nutrition screening and intervention program. The brochure provides an introduction to nutrition care as a part of preventive care, explains the importance of nutritional health, and answers common questions.
