A new AAFP program, MOM Care: Management of Maternity Care, could help you and your patients bring healthier babies into the world.
"For years, family physicians have wanted to have a prenatal program that was sponsored by the AAFP," says AAFP Director Bruce Bagley, MD. "We've been using programs from other organizations--often designed for very high-risk populations--or we've developed programs for our own practices. Now we have one program appropriate to what most of us family physicians do nationwide."
MOM Care features:
The Academy hopes MOM Care will help you reduce the incidence of preterm delivery, premature rupture of the membranes, low birth weight, neonatal ICU admission, and neonatal mortality.
"This is an entire system of care, not just a record-keeping sheet," says Dr. Bagley, of Latham, NY, chair of the AAFP Commission on Quality and Scope of Practice. He helped pilot test the forerunner of MOM Care, a program developed by the Florida AFP in conjunction with the Medical Professional Liability Agency Ltd. (MedPro). Last fall, the AAFP purchased the program and began adapting it for nationwide use.
About 33 percent of active AAFP members now include obstetrics in their practices, compared with about 40 percent in 1987 and 30 percent in 1992.
You may order MOM Care later this month for $149 plus $6 for shipping and handling (nonmember price, $225 plus $8 for shipping and handling). Call the AAFP Order Department at (800) 944-0000 and request item #R703.
