Happy 50 years, Academy!
Officially, the Academy turns 50 years old at 8:25 p.m. on June 10. At that time in 1947, about 200 general practitioners met during an AMA meeting in the Claridge Hotel's Solarium in Atlantic City, NJ. The group unanimously adopted the Bylaws and Constitution, elected their officers, and began selecting delegates in state caucuses. By the end of the AMA meeting, 220 GPs had paid $25 in membership fees to join the fledgling association.
