Fellowship criteria to change in 1999
The AAFP Fellowship program is marking its silver anniversary with two innovations: an electronic application form and the reminder that new criteria will replace the old criteria by 1999.
Web, phone, and fax. You may now obtain your Fellowship application three ways. Access http:// www.aafp.org/fellow for the application, which you can print, complete, and mail to the AAFP. You can also call the Academy at (800) 274-2237, ext. 4116, to request an application and learn if you're eligible to apply. Or you can use AAFP Express--the Academy's fax-back system--by calling (800) AAFP EXP [223-7397] and requesting document #4000.
New criteria. The criteria approved in 1992 constitute pathway two to becoming a Fellow; until Dec. 31, 1998, you may use either pathway two or the old criteria, pathway one. By 1999, only pathway two will remain in effect. Some distinctions: Pathway one confers Fellowship for board certification or completion of 600 hours of postgraduate study as an AAFP active member; pathway two, much broader, requires experience in areas such as academic training and CME, publishing and research, volunteer teaching, public service, and service to the specialty.
If you'd like to receive the degree of Fellow at the Scientific Assembly Sept. 20 in Chicago, apply by Aug. 1.
