Get ready, get set for Family Physicians Care for America Week
Academy members across the country are gearing up for Family Physicians Care for America Week Oct. 20-26.
In honor of the Academy's 50th anniversary, many FPs will showcase their public service to their communities. For example:
- Arizona AFP members will talk with parents and students at about 80 middle schools, covering hot topics for teens -- peer pressure, self-esteem, sex, exercise, obesity, depression, suicide, eating habits, and tobacco.
- Iowa AFP members, including residents, will give patients brochures about the steps an abused person should take when preparing to leave home, the most dangerous time for the victim. Physicians will display posters saying, "This is a safe place to talk about domestic violence. We may not always ask, but we're always willing to listen." Educational materials for physicians address care for both the abused and the abuser.
- The University of Minnesota family medicine interest group in Minneapolis/St. Paul will conduct health screening checks at a mall and provide patient education.
About 6,000 members requested kits from the AAFP with ideas for publicizing the specialty during the week, which is supported in part by a grant from Zeneca Pharmaceuticals. If you're not yet involved, call your chapter.
- FP Report is published by the AAFP News Department.
