Physicians With Heart heads for republic of Georgia

Physicians With Heart, a joint effort of the Academy, AAFP Foundation, and the humanitarian organization Heart to Heart International, has taken its fifth annual shipment of medical supplies to a former Soviet republic.

Items on the airlift to Georgia included pharmaceuticals, stethoscopes, otoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, and new or nearly new Physicians' Desk Reference books.

The airlift targeted hospitals in cities with high concentrations of Georgia's 250,000 displaced people. These people fled from internal conflicts in Abkhazia and Ossetia, two remote regions of Georgia fighting for independence from the country's central government.

Academy members and other participants on the mission delivered pharmaceuticals and medical supplies to Georgian hospitals. They toured recipient hospitals, documenting the safe arrival of supplies and conducting updates. A day-long medical seminar took place in Tbilisi, Georgia, with morning presentations on the philosophy of family practice and afternoon workshops on clinical topics.
