Congress acts for future FPs
The AAFP Congress of Delegates did residents a few favors last month. Acting on resolutions submitted by chapters, the Congress voted for the Academy to:
- oppose discrimination in the hiring, credentialing and privileging of physicians, including residents;
- develop training guidelines for participating in health care teams; and
- encourage third-party payers to credential family practice residents in time for them to begin receiving reimbursement for their services right after residency. Typically, credentialing by insurance companies may take several months, and new graduates may not be paid or may have their payments delayed.
Delegates also adopted a Bylaws amendment to expand AAFP's international membership category to include not only practicing physicians but also students and physicians in training.
