| ASSEMBLY EDITION ORLANDO, FLA |
When President Michael Fleming, M.D., of Shreveport, La., announced the Academy's fitness initiative Americans in Motion at the 2003 Scientific Assembly, he pledged to boost his activity level and challenged other FPs to do the same. He promised, "You'll see less of me next year!"
Since then, he's lost 50 pounds, he told the Congress of Delegates Monday. Besides, he's been able to do away with two of his four medications for blood pressure control.
Now it's time for FPs to take the next step in the AIM fitness initiative, step two, The Healthiest Family Medicine Office in America. Between Oct. 14 and Jan. 31, you can go to the AIM Web site (http://www.aafp.org/healthyoffice.xml) to register your office or institution in this six-week fitness program.
The initiative will award prizes - from microwaves to fitness equipment - to both groups and individuals meeting personal goals during the program. Winners will be announced May 18, coinciding with National Employee Health and Fitness Day.
Also this week, attendees can go on a "treasure walk" at Assembly. Each FP attending the Assembly can receive a pedometer and have his or her body mass index plus two new measurements - grip strength and waist circumference - recorded as part of the next "How Fit Is Our Specialty" study. To learn more, visit the Americans in Motion exhibit in the AAFP Marketplace, Booth 1542 in the Exposition Hall (the convention center's Hall West A-B3).
See tomorrow's FP Report, Assembly Edition for information on Congress of Delegates actions related to AIM.
