FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Monday, June 07, 2010
LEAWOOD, Kan. — TransforMED, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the American Academy of Family Physicians, today announced that Allan H. Goroll, M.D., MACP, will join the TransforMED team of practice transformation experts as a payment reform specialist. Goroll is a leading expert in health care reform, with an emphasis on payment reform as it relates to implementing the patient-centered medical home model of care in primary care practices.
In this new role, Dr. Goroll will lead efforts within TransforMED to identify clients’ organizational characteristics that lend themselves to successful payment reform initiatives, including practice population analysis, culture and leadership assessment and tolerance for managing risk and change. He will work directly with clients to help them advocate, formulate and negotiate payment reform proposals with relevant internal and external parties and help them evaluate the feasibility of payment options being offered to them. Additionally, Dr. Goroll will help connect TransforMED clients with appropriate vendors for technical support, risk-adjustment services and assistance with implementing new payment models.
“As the patient-centered medical home model of care continues to gain acceptance as a promising means of increasing health care quality and lowering costs, it is imperative to reexamine how primary care physicians are compensated,” said Terry McGeeney, M.D., MBA, president and CEO of TransforMED. “Dr. Goroll will play an instrumental role in helping TransforMED clients evaluate and recommend new and innovative ways of paying for primary care services — many of which are currently underpaid or not paid for at all.”
In addition to his work with TransforMED, Dr. Goroll will continue to lead the Payment Reform Task Force of the Patient-Centered Primary Care Collaborative in Washington, D.C., and will continue serving as chair of the Massachusetts Coalition for Primary Care Reform. Dr. Goroll will also continue in his role as a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and as a primary care internist at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Goroll has served in multiple leadership positions in medicine, including president of the Massachusetts Medical Society and Massachusetts Governor of the American College of Physicians. As ACP governor, Dr. Goroll founded and chaired the Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative to pilot community-wide adoption of electronic health records in Massachusetts. He more recently established the Massachusetts Coalition for Primary Care Reform to field test new models of primary care practice and payment.
Dr. Goroll is considered one of the pioneers of modern primary care medicine, founding with colleagues the first primary care internal medicine residency and publishing the first textbook of primary care internal medicine, “Primary Care Medicine,” which is now in its 6th edition and considered a standard in the field.
Dr. Goroll graduated summa cum laude in Biology from Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., and cum laude from Harvard Medical School. He completed his primary care internal medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital.
