LEAWOOD, Kan. – TransforMED, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the American Academy of Family Physicians, today announced changes to its governing board. Marcia Nielsen, Ph.D., MPH, joined the TransforMED Board of Managers effective June 1. She replaced Jeff Gruen, M.D., MBA, who will participate in a soon to be announced Washington D.C.-based TransforMED advisory committee to advance the patient-centered medical home model of care in the national health policy agenda.

Nielsen currently serves as vice chancellor for public policy at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., where she oversees initiatives regarding health care policy, as well as the planning and development of strategic initiatives to advance the mission of the University. She also serves as a faculty member within the Department of Health Policy and Management, and is the associate director of public policy at the Institute for Community and Public Health. She has a Ph.D. in health policy and management from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and a Masters of Public Health from George Washington University.

Nielsen previously served as executive director of the Kansas Health Policy Authority where she was appointed by then-Governor Kathleen Sebelius to serve as the first chair of the authority board and, in 2006, accepted the position as the authority’s executive director. There she oversaw the development and maintenance of a coordinated health policy agenda that combined the effective purchasing and administration of health care with promotion-oriented public health strategies.

“Ms. Nielsen has a proven track record in health care innovation, policy making and leadership,” said Terry McGeeney, M.D., MBA, president and CEO of TransforMED. “Her contributions will be instrumental in keeping TransforMED at the forefront of patient-centered medical home innovations and services.”
