LEAWOOD, Kan. — In an effort to help curb the nation’s soaring rates of overweight and obesity, the American Academy of Family Physicians’ Americans in Motion – Healthy Interventions has developed an online nutrition questionnaire to help patients assess their risk of nutrient deficiencies, and to help family physicians strategically address the nutritional habits of patients and their families.With patients increasingly seeking health information online, this free resource is designed to motivate patients to practice healthy eating behavior.The free online tool is designed to encourage patients to work with their family physician to assess potential risk for nutrient deficiencies that may contribute to health problems. The tool asks how often the patient eats various types of fruits, vegetables, dairy products, fish and meat, as well as how many fresh and processed foods they purchase. Funded by a grant from Nature Made®, the online tool addresses common nutrient deficiencies including potassium, calcium, vitamin D, iron, folate and vitamin B-12. The tool was also designed to prompt family physicians to further assess the overall nutritional health status of their patients. The nutritional tool is available as a downloadable PDF on the AAFP’s award-winning, patient-oriented website, FamilyDoctor.org. It is also featured on the AAFP’s AIM-HI website to provide family physicians with hard copies to place in waiting areas or exam rooms. The AIM-HI program helps family physicians, residents, and their practice staff work with families to prevent and treat obesity, overweight and the chronic diseases related to these conditions through a multifaceted fitness initiative that incorporates physical activity, healthy eating and emotional well-being. The AAFP recognizes the health threat that childhood and adult obesity presents for this nation and is working with its supporters and partner organizations to offer new resources and expand the reach of AIM-HI to more family medicine practices. AIM-HI and its efforts are supported by educational grants from core supporters that include the AAFP Foundation, the National Dairy Council, Nature Made®, Sanofi-Aventis and The Coca-Cola Company.
