“In my private practice in rural Indiana, I take care of many farmers, most of whom buy their own insurance. To be frugal, many choose not to carry insurance and, if they do buy coverage, they often have a high deductible, no preventive care and limited prescription benefits. These plans require them to pay for almost all of their care out of pocket, and yet they continue to see skyrocketing monthly premiums. It is shocking that these plans seem to take advantage of my patients who are trying hard to do the right thing and buy coverage for their families. With the new health insurance marketplaces, my patients will have a new place to obtain more robust coverage for preventive care, less expensive sick care, and the assurance that their whole family will have coverage when they need it - all at an affordable price.”
