-- G. Gayle Stephens, M.D., FAAFP, of Birmingham, Ala., died Feb. 20 at age 85. Considered one of the preeminent champions of the specialty and a fierce advocate of family medicine's role in reforming and reshaping the face of medicine, Stephens had been a member of the AAFP since 1959.
John Clowe, M.D., FAAFP
-- John Clowe, M.D., FAAFP, of Englewood, Fla., died May 25, 2011, at age 89. A former AMA president, Clowe had been a member of the Academy since 1954.
Barbara Starfield, M.D., M.P.H.
-- Barbara Starfield, M.D., M.P.H., of Baltimore, died June 10, 2011, at age 78. A pediatrician and renown health services researcher, Starfield was considered a strong advocate for primary care and a friend to family medicine.
Thomas Stern, M.D., FAAFP
-- Thomas Stern, M.D., FAAFP, of Sun Lakes, Ariz., died May 28, 2011, at age 90. He had been a member of the Academy since 1956. A former director of the AAFP Division of Education and founder of the Academy's Residency Assistance Program -- now known as Residency Program Solutions -- Stern held a number of other positions with the AAFP and the AAFP Foundation and received multiple honors from both organizations.
