F. Marian Bishop, Ph.D, M.S.P.H., Receives John G. Walsh Award from the AAFP
SAN DIEGO -- F. Marian Bishop, Ph.D, M.S.P.H., was named the recipient of the John G. Walsh Award by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). Established in 1973, the John G. Walsh Award is given on the basis of dedicated, long-term, effective leadership toward furthering the development of family practice. The award is one of the highest honors presented by the Academy.
Bishop is professor and chairman emeritus of the department of family and preventative medicine at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. She has long been dedicated to advancing the development of family practice. Bishop has served in various capacities for the Department of Health and Human Services in the Health Resources and Services administration. Among those appointments, Bishop was chair for the Peer Review, Area Health Education Centers, Title VII and served on the External Advisory Panel for Primary Care. She was actively involved in the development of the Committee for Departments of Family Medicine Grant Reviews and was chairman of the National Advisory Council on Health Professions Education. Currently, Bishop is the vice president for the Council on Graduate Medical Education for the Health Resources and Services Administration.
In 1990, the National Health Service Corps awarded Bishop the United States Public Health Service Director’s Award for exemplary service. In 2000, the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Foundation created the F. Marian Bishop Scholars program. The International Women’s Forum recognized Bishop with their Women Who Make a Difference Award in 2001.
Active in the Utah state government, Bishop has served in various capacities, including as a member of the Utah Task Force on Rural Health Policy Development and chairman of the Rural Medical Financial Assistance Committee. She has also served on the Preventive Health Care Services Technical Advisory Group for the Utah Health Policy Commission, and on the advisory committee of the Utah Arthritis Control Program.
Bishop is a member of the STFM Foundation board of trustees, and served as president from 1985 to 1987. She is a fellow and life member of the American Sociological Association, the American Anthropological Association, and a life member of the American Public Health Association. In 1994, she was made an honorary member by the AAFP.
Bishop is the author of numerous presentations and has written a variety of articles that have appeared in several publications including the British Journal of Medical Education, the Journal of Practical Nursing, the Journal of Community Health and the Textbook of Family Practice. She is currently serving as chairman for the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
