Most family physicians embrace the concept of patient self-management because it opens the door to patients' involvement in their own health care. In an effort to help physicians learn the necessary skills, the AAFP and TransforMED have lined up a series of three monthly webinars -- May through July -- that dive into patient self-management techniques.
Registration for all three webinars, which are free to AAFP members, is available via TransforMED's Delta-Exchange network. The first webinar in the series is titled "Motivational Interviewing: Can I Really Influence My Patient's Motivation to Change?" and is scheduled for May 22 at 1 p.m. CDT.
Webinar host Denise Ernst, Ph.D., of Portland, Ore., is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers with 20 years of experience in the field. Ernst's focus on patients who are dealing with lifestyle changes and management of chronic health conditions makes her a professional partner that physicians can trust.
During the one-hour webinar, Ernst will make the case for motivational interviewing by examining current supporting research. She'll also outline a proven communication style and skill set that physicians should be aware of when talking with patients about managing their health and considering lifestyle changes.
An archived version of the webinar will be available for physicians who are unable to view the presentation live. In addition, the AAFP has a number of resources on the topic of patient-centered care, which is considered one of the building blocks of the patient-centered medical home model of care.
