Personal Statement

The greatest results in life are usually attained by simple means and the exercise of ordinary qualities. These may for the most part be summed in these two: common-sense and perseverance. Owen Feltham, Author

I believe the qualities of common-sense and perseverance may be found in many of AAFP’s past and current leaders and are qualities that have helped us to maintain a presence in Washington, gain respect in the public eye and be trusted advisors to our patients. These qualities are important to me and are characteristics that will help me remain strong and steadfast in representing your needs and the needs of Family Medicine on the AAFP Board of Directors.

My work experience includes helping start a large hospital-based multispecialty group. Ten years later, I set out on my own and started a small two-person practice that grew to three physicians. After a decade of working on our own, we decided that change was coming faster than we could deal with as a small independent practice. We needed a partner, so we joined a large physician owned multi-specialty clinic. I am now the associate medical director of that clinic.

My involvement in organized medicine began when I was a medical student. I met my wife at a student and resident meeting in Kansas City when she was working for the AAFP. I have worked with our state academy for years and I have had the pleasure of holding most every office. I also have served on the executive committee of our state medical society, most recently finishing my year as president. In addition, I have served on commissions with the AAFP. I believe we are successful by making a commitment to organized medicine and being part of the solution.

Although battles with payers, specialists, politicians, and others will surely present challenges for our profession, I’m convinced that what we have in common is more important than what differentiates us. Physicians are in a unique position to solve our problems and improve the practice of medicine and the health of our patients. I want to serve on the board of directors for the AAFP and help guide us through this tumultuous time and be part of the solution. I would be honored to serve you on the AAFP Board of Directors and I ask for you support and your vote.
