Daniel R. Spogen, MD, FAAFP, a family physician in Reno, Nev., serves on the board of directors of the American Academy of Family Physicians. The AAFP represents 105,900 physicians and medical students nationwide. Spogen was elected to a three-year term in September 2011 by the AAFP’s governing body, the Congress of Delegates. As a board member of the AAFP, Spogen advocates on behalf of family physicians and patients nationwide to inspire positive change in the U.S. health care system.
Spogen has been a practicing family physician for more than 20 years. He currently serves as a professor and chairman of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Nevada School of Medicine in Reno, where he also serves as a faculty professor and director of medical education. Spogen was in private practice in Reno from 1984 to 2005. Prior to that, he served as acting program director of the University of Nevada School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency Program.
A member of the AAFP since 1983, Spogen has served on and chaired numerous committees and commissions, including the Commission on Education, the Commission on Continuing Physician Development and the Subcommittee on Scientific Programming.
A member of the Nevada Academy of Family Physicians since 1983, Spogen has held numerous positions on its board of directors, including a term as president.
Spogen has received numerous awards, including the Nevada AFP Family Physician of the Year award in 1996 and 2010. In 2004, he received the AAFP Exemplary Teaching Award for Volunteer Faculty. He was most recently awarded the Truckee Meadows Award for Excellence in Teaching Healthcare Delivery.
Spogen earned his undergraduate degree in biophysics from Occidental College, Los Angeles. He earned a Master’s Degree in biomedical engineering and medical degree from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and completed his family medicine residency at Glendale Adventist Family Medicine Residency in Glendale, Calif. He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and has the AAFP Degree of Fellow, an earned degree awarded to family physicians for distinguished service and continuing medical education.
