Barbara J. Doty, M.D., FAAFP
Barbara J. Doty, MD, FAAFP, serves on the board of directors of the American Academy of Family Physicians. The AAFP represents 105,900 physicians and medical students nationwide. Doty was elected to a three-year term by the AAFP’s governing body, the Congress of Delegates.

Doty is a practicing family physician in Wasilla, Alaska. She is a founding member and senior partner at Providence Matanuska Health Care where she has practiced the full spectrum of family medicine, ranging from obstetrics to geriatrics, for more than 25 years. Doty also holds an appointment as associate clinical professor for the University of Washington School of Medicine where she has long served as a site coordinator for the school’s rural immersion program for third-year medical students with expressed interested in family medicine. As an AAFP board member, she advocates on behalf of family physicians and patients nationwide to inspire positive change in the U.S. health care system.

Doty also serves on the board of managers for TransforMED, a non-profit, wholly-owned subsidiary of the AAFP that is focused on helping primary care medical practices adopt the patient-centered medical home model of care. In this role, Doty works with other members of the board of managers to approve and oversee the TransforMED operating budget, as well as goals and performance measures to assure consistency with the AAFP’s budgeted capital contributions to the new business entity.

At the state level, Doty has been an active member of the Alaska Academy of Family Physicians since 1986 where she has served in numerous leadership positions, including past-president and board member. She is recognized as a leader in developing progressive and high-quality continuing medical education resources for Alaskan family physicians.

At the national level, Doty has been an active member of the AAFP since 1986. She served as Alaska’s state delegate to the AAFP’s Congress of Delegates for ten years and is a former member of the AAFP Commission on Education, the Subcommittee on International Medicine and the Committee on Rural Health.

Doty was awarded the Alaska Family Physician of the Year award in 1995 for her leadership in establishing the Alaska Family Medicine Residency Program. The Anchorage-based program has placed more than 60 practicing family physicians in Alaska during the last decade. Doty has also lectured at several international seminars related to training for rural medicine. As a member of the Working Party on Rural Practice of the World Organization of Family Doctors, she actively explores opportunities for international exchange.

Doty graduated cum laude from Washington State University, Pullman, with a bachelor’s degree in zoology. She earned her medical degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle, and she completed her family medicine residency at the University of Colorado Family Practice Residency, Denver. Doty has completed fellowship programs in rural medicine, integrative medicine and faculty development. She also is a certified medical acupuncturist.

Doty is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. She also has the AAFP Degree of Fellow, an earned degree awarded to family physicians for distinguished service and continuing medical education.
