Jessica Johnson
Student Member
Jessica Johnson, a student at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Farmington, is the student member of the American Academy of Family Physicians Board of Directors. The AAFP represents 100,300 physicians and medical students nationwide. Johnson was elected to a one-year term by the National Congress of Student Members and was confirmed by the governing body of the AAFP, the Congress of Delegates.
As the student member of the board of directors, Johnson is responsible for representing the interests and opinions of the National Congress of Student Members to the AAFP Board of Directors and Congress of Delegates. In addition, she will advocate on behalf of family physicians and patients nationwide to inspire positive change in the U.S. health care system.
A member of the AAFP since 2007, Johnson has served on the AAFP Commission on Education since 2010 and as a Family Medicine Interest Group regional coordinator from 2009 through 2010. She has been very active with the AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students, serving as a Connecticut Academy of Family Physicians delegate to the conference, a discussion group moderator and reference committee chair. From 2008 to this year, Johnson was the student member of the Connecticut Academy of Family Physicians Board of Directors.
In addition, she has served was the Primary Care Coalition of Connecticut’s first health policy intern, a position she held while she was completing her master of public health coursework. She also served as a member of the National Primary Care Week planning committee.
This year, Johnson was named a Pisacano Scholar, the prestigious award presented by the Pisacano Leadership Foundation of the American Board of Family Medicine. She also has received the Urban Service Track Leadership Award, which recognizes UST participants for their substantial leadership and commitment to service with underserved populations.
As a medical student, Johnson conducted research into provider perceptions about oral health in community health center patients who have diabetes. She has made numerous award-winning presentations at the Society for Teachers of Family Medicine Annual Predoctoral Conference, the Connecticut Association of Public Health Annual Conference, and other organizational meetings and conferences.
Johnson has volunteered as finance and fundraising chair and as a manager of the South Park Inn Medical Clinic, a student-run free clinic in Hartford, Conn. She also was volunteer manager at the Covenant Soup Kitchen Free Clinic in Willimantic, Conn., and co-chair for Habitat for Humanity in Hartford, Conn. She was a volunteer health education instructor at the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford, Conn., and the medical student coordinator at the Migrant Farm Clinic based in Farmington, Conn.
Johnson will complete her medical degree and master of public health degree in May 2012.
