Improving Primary Health Care in Albania

Improving Primary Health Care in Albania

In 2003, the AAFP, through the efforts of the International Activities office and the AAFP Center for International Health Initiatives Advisory Board, received a subcontract in cooperation with University Research Corporation, LLC, and Bearing Point for the USAID project Improving Primary Health Care in Albania. Initially it was a three-year subcontract, renewable for two more years, to provide technical assistance in the development of primary health care and family medicine in Albania.

By the end of phase I, September 2006, 12 CIHI consultants visited Albania to work with project partners and Albania's Ministry of Health on issues related to primary health care development, educational training models, licensing and certification/accreditation systems.

In October 2006, the AAFP was included in a two-year project extension. Five consultation visits have been accomplished since then. The Framework of Family Medicine and Basic Package of Services have been developed in collaboration with local stakeholders. Currently, USAID funding is available through 2009.
