Mission in North Concludes on High Note

February 21, 2001

Members of the Physicians With Heart delegation in Hanoi were moved by a "thank you" ceremony thrown for them late this afternoon by Professor Ton That Bach, dean of the Hanoi Medical University.

When the delegation arrived at the university expecting a low-key event, they were wowed by a 20-foot-long banner that greeted them in the parking lot. The bold red letters proclaimed thanks to all of the Physicians With Heart partners. Local television crews were on hand to cover the event.

Speaking on behalf of the Vietnamese people, Bach praised the work of Physicians With Heart and indicated there is indeed a place for family practice in his country. "Family medicine is very important to the future of Vietnam," said Bach. "We look forward to collaborating with you to make that happen."

AAFP President Richard Roberts, M.D., J.D., of Madison, Wis., presented several gifts to Bach, including a blood pressure cuff, an otoscope and a stethoscope, all provided by airlift supporter Welch Allyn. "I give you something for pressure -- and we hope there is no pressure," said Roberts. "I give you something for the ears so we can listen to one another, and something to help you remember Physicians With Heart when you listen to the heart."

Roberts continued, "There are many ways in which we are different, but one in which we are the same is that we each want what is best for the health of our people."

Bach graciously accepted the symbolic gifts from Roberts with these words of thanks: "We are pleased to receive the donation of medical products and equipment to support family practice and training in Vietnam. I promise we will make the best use of these donations."
